10 years ago, on June 7, 2007, the first satellite of the COSMO-SkyMed constellation was orbited.
COSMO-SkyMed is a scientific and technological excellence, funded by ASI, the Italian Space Agency, in partnership with the Ministry of Defense and realized thanks to the expertise of the Italian space industry, especially Leonardo and its two joint ventures: Thales Alenia Space (Thales 67%, Leonardo 33%) and Telespazio (Leonardo 67%, Thales 33%).
COSMO-SkyMed is the first civilian system designed for both civilian and military use and it is at the forefront of technology and uses high-resolution radar sensors to observe the Earth day and night, regardless of weather conditions, featuring extremely high re-visitation frequency, for greater monitoring capacity.
COSMO-SkyMed provides data on a global scale to support a variety of applications among which risk management, environment protection, natural resources exploration, land management, defense and security, forestry management, maritime surveillance, agriculture and precision farming. The radar constellation also provides applications for damage assessment following natural disasters, such as earthquakes, landslides and flooding, for monitoring of critical infrastructures, for tracking the movement of glaciers, and for monitoring illegal activities such as oil spills and the trafficking of goods or people.
Data from the satellite is transmitted to the Space Center in Matera, where e-GEOS analyze this information to generate value-added services.
e-GEOS is the world-wide exclusive distributor of COSMO-SkyMed and operates, on behalf of ASI, the IC-UGS (Italian Civilian User Ground Segment) at the Matera Space Center.
In its first decade of service, COSMO-SkyMed has captured over one million radar scenes worldwide, by monitoring UNESCO World Heritage Sites and generating data that is vital to understanding the phenomena that affect our planet.
